Georgia Pickles: Award-Winning Jars Made in Atlanta

4 min readBy Atlanta Pickles Team

Jar of The Banana Pickle, Flavor of Georgia Best Pickle 2024, by [PICKLES]

Georgia takes its pickles seriously. Okra on the relish tray, green tomatoes in the jar, a sweet bread and butter chip next to the barbecue: these are the flavors a lot of Southerners grew up with.

We make our pickles in small batches in Atlanta, and a few of them have picked up some of the state's (and the country's) top food awards. Here is a guide to Georgia pickles: the award winners, the Southern favorites, how hot each one is, and where to buy them.

What makes a Georgia pickle?

There is no official rulebook, but Southern pickles tend to share a few traits. They go beyond the cucumber, with okra and green tomatoes as regulars. They range from puckery sour to properly sweet. And they are made to sit next to Southern food: fried chicken, barbecue, pimento cheese, shrimp and grits.

We sort every jar into three simple categories: Sour, Spicy and Sweet. That makes it easy to find the Georgia pickle that matches how you like to eat.

Our award-winning Georgia pickles

The Banana Pickle: Flavor of Georgia Best Pickle, 2024

The Banana Pickle is named for banana peppers, and it is not spicy. It tastes like a well-balanced garlic dill, and it was named Best Pickle at Flavor of Georgia in 2024.

The Green Tomatoes: Flavor of Georgia 2026 Category Winner

The Green Tomatoes is the Banana Pickle's twin, made with green tomatoes instead of cucumbers. Same garlicky, dill-forward balance, a meatier bite, and a Flavor of Georgia 2026 Category Winner. Read more in our pickled green tomatoes guide.

The Spicy Garlic: Good Food Award, 2026

The Spicy Garlic won a 2026 Good Food Award. Like every jar with Spicy in its name, it is a 3 out of 5 on our heat scale, made with habanero.

The Ghost Pickle: Best Spicy, 2024 Artisan International Flavor Awards

The Ghost Pickle is our hottest jar at 4 out of 5, and it took Best Spicy at the 2024 Artisan International Flavor Awards. It brings heat, but it is built for flavor too.

The award shelf at a glance: Flavor of Georgia Best Pickle 2024 (The Banana Pickle), Flavor of Georgia 2026 Category Winner (The Green Tomatoes), Good Food Award 2026 (The Spicy Garlic), and Best Spicy at the 2024 Artisan International Flavor Awards (The Ghost Pickle). Southern favorites to try

Pickled okra, mild or spicy

The Okra is crisp and tangy with garlic and dill. The Spicy Okra is the same Southern staple at a 3 out of 5. Both make a great Bloody Mary garnish. See our pickled okra guide for more.

Green tomatoes

Firm, tangy and very Southern, and the jar that won Flavor of Georgia in 2026. Try them on a fried chicken sandwich or next to pulled pork.

Bread and butter pickles

The Bread and Butter is our sweet chip, made with brown and white sugar and a warm cinnamon pickling spice. It is the one for burgers, barbecue and anyone who likes a sweeter pickle.

How hot are they?

Heat is fixed, not a matter of opinion. Every jar with Spicy in its name is a 3 out of 5, made with habanero. The Ghost Pickle is the hottest at 4 out of 5. The Banana Pickle, The Green Tomatoes, The Okra and The Bread and Butter have no heat at all. Our spicy pickles heat scale walks through every jar.

Good to know: every jar is 17 oz and shelf-stable for up to two years unopened. Once open, keep it in the fridge.
