Pickle Flavors Explained: Tips for Choosing Your Perfect Jar

We make more than 40 flavors, so "which one should I get?" is the question we hear most. The good news: every jar fits into one of three families, sour, spicy or sweet. Here are our tips for finding your flavor (or the right one for a gift).

Tip 1: Find your place on the sour scale

"Dill" is not its own family. It is an ingredient in our sour jars. When people ask for a dill pickle, they usually mean no sugar. Our sour jars run from least to most sour:

• The Dill Chips: the least sour, with salt, coriander and lemon-lime zest.
• The Vintage: medium, with classic pickling spice and crushed bay leaf.
• The Power Sour: the most sour of all.

Tip 2: Heat is a number, not a guess

Our heat levels are fixed. Anything named "Spicy" is a 3 out of 5, made with chili flakes and habanero: The Spicy Okra, The Spicy Green Beans and the rest. The Ghost Pickle is a 4 out of 5 and the only jar that stings. See the heat scale, the Ghost Pickle guide and spicy and hot.

Tip 3: Know your sweet jars

• The Bread and Butter: brown and white sugar with cinnamon pickling spice, and no clove.
• The Grape Pickle: our November-to-December holiday pickle, with one clove and cinnamon pickling spice.

Tip 4: The not-spicy surprise
